The "Spiritual Legacy" of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer in Elizabeth, PA

"Through our vocation to the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer we are incorporated into the charism of Mother Alphonse Marie."  (Constitution 6)
In the life of our Mother Foundress, the grace she once received developed during her entire life.  The particular gift of grace of Mother Alphonse Marie was to meditate on the mystery of Redemption, to live it, and to help others find access to this mystery.
Mother Alphonse Marie founded a religious congregation which draws strength for apostolic ministry from meditating on the mystery of Redemption.
Contemplative prayer and apostolic ministry should, therefore, be closely intertwined.  We fasten our gaze on Christ so we may be transformed, and then with the loving face of Christ, we go to meet our brothers and sisters to offer them our service.  Only the Redeemer's love can be our motivation in all we do.
As a faith-filled community of women, we desire to live our religious life in simplicity according to the Evangelical Councils and Mother Alphone Marie's charism.

CHARISM OF OUR CONGREGATION

"The spirit of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer should be the spirit of Jesus Christ.  Their lives shall be completely modelled on His and take their direction from her life.  Each sister should be able to say with the apostle,  "The life I live now is not my own.  'Christ is living in me' (Gasl2,20) so that the life of Jesus is evident in her whole being"  (cf Original Rule I,III).

Mother Alphonse Marie's particular charism was:
  • to meditate on the mystery of the Redemption
  • to become wholly immersed in this mystery
  • to bring it to fruition in apostolic service
SPIRITUALITY OF THE CONGREGATION

Together with our Foundress, we fix our gaze on Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world.  We see His face in our sisters in Community, in others, but especially in the suffering.
From the Eucharist, the Word of God, the Liturgy, prayer and devotion to the Mother of God, we draw strength to cooperate in the work of Redemption in a spirit of reconciliation.

In the words of Mother Alphonse, our beloved foundress "The Congregation is founded to the honor of the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Sisters of the Divine Redeemer shall honor these most holy Hearts, especially by imitating them in doing good to those in need. Indeed, this is the best way to serve them."

The design is an incomplete cross to illustrate Colossians 1:24
“… I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ”.

The two intertwined circles indicate the humanity and divinity of our Redeemer. “
Our lives, too, can be grounded and sustained only in redemptive suffering and in his resurrection” (C. 4).
